Giant Trevally
The Giant Trevally is a very large fish found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends from the southern tip of Africa in the west, up to Japan in the north, Australia in the south and as far as Hawaii in the east.
Giant Trevally
The Giant Trevally inhabits a wide range of habitats, including the open ocean, atolls, coral reefs and estuaries. Interestingly, juveniles are often found in low salinity water bodies inland, such as lagoons and even the upper reaches of rivers.
The Giant Trevally is an apex predator across most of its range, hunting both alone and in large schools. Curious hunting strategies have been observed in the wild, many of which are opportunist in nature, such as following other predators like sharks and seals and snatching their prey. It's also an important species to commercial fisheries as well as being a popular game fish, with mature individuals reaching up to 180cm in length and weighing in at over 80kg.
Our Giant Trevally lives in a large open top tank along side other species, such as sweetlips, rays and angelfish. He's a bit of a character, and is quite partial to splashing visitors who peer over the top of the tank with a quick thrust of his powerful tail. At feeding times he becomes very excitable, racing around the tank and breaking the surface regularly.
