Charity & Community

Community

Sydney Aquarium is committed to providing education to the community about Australia’s unique aquatic environments and the animal and plant life they support. Dangerous marine animals, the effects of plastic debris on wildlife and the threats from various sources facing areas of biological and economic significance such as the Murray Darling basin and the Great Barrier Reef are just a sample of the educational information presented to visitors.

As part of our commitment to conservation the Aquarium works closely with organisations such as World Wildlife Foundation and National Parks Association to highlight the devastating impact of human activity on fragile environments and vulnerable species such as the Grey Nurse shark. The facilities at Sydney Aquarium are often utilised by such organisations for conservation campaign launches and media briefings.

Sydney Aquarium’s breeding program for selected species has had remarkable success. Every year, baby Port Jackson and Wobbegong sharks and seahorses born at the Aquarium are released into suitable habitat areas around the Harbour. In this way, the seahorse population of Sydney Harbour which has suffered due to over-collecting for medicinal treatments receives a boost. Fairy Penguins also breed successfully at the Aquarium and the offspring, once fully fledged, are offered to other institutions.

Although not a research facility, Sydney Aquarium has a very popular work experience program for tertiary students for them to gain valuable animal husbandry experience for their studies.

We highly value our good relationship with schools and community organisations and are happy to respond to requests for donations from these groups for their fundraising ventures.
