Sydney Harbour is a drowned river valley and hence has a diverse number
of habitats because of the various bays, inlets, rocky reefs, sand
and mud flats. These provide a variety of areas for many different
species of plants and animals to colonize and live. It is also a haven
in the
summer months for tropical animals that arrive from the far north on
the
currents going south at this time of year.
The displays within these
exhibits simulate these different habitats from the intertidal zones to
the deeper reefs and sand flats throughout
the harbour. From the colourful to the bizarre, the exhibits show and
explain that the diversity of temperate animals can be just as interesting
and inspiring as those of tropical habitats.
