Little Penguin Eudyptula minor, colonies are widely distributed along
the Australian coast from Port Stephens in northern New South Wales
to Fremantle in Western Australia and various islands in between.
Their
nesting sites vary from rocky caves, crevices and sand hollows
under vegetation to under the steps of stairways and under houses.
Unfortunately, penguin numbers in some areas are under threat from animals
such as foxes,
cats and dogs, as well as human development.
Penguins feed on schools of pilchards and other small fish species
that occur in large numbers. If there is a reduction in this food supply,
a subsequent reduction in penguin numbers occurs.
