Many of the rivers of northern Australia are associated with seasonal
flooding and migration of many species of fish. The Barramundi often
moves downstream during flood waters to spawn in estuaries or coastal
shallows.
The Barramundi can be found in either clear or turbid water in mangrove
estuaries, creeks and rivers.
Seasonal changes in food availability
mean that the diet varies over the year, but generally the diet consists
of shrimp, crayfish, crabs,
aquatic insects and fish.
Male fish in excess of five years old often
undergo a rapid spawning sex transformation to become females. The adults
return to their original
river system after spawning.
A large Barramundi can reach 60kg.
