The Saltwater Crocodile is the world’s largest living crocodile.
In Australia they are found from Rockhampton in Queensland to Broome on
the west coast of Western Australia. They are restricted to the coastal
fringe and river that drain into it. They occur in tidal and non-tidal
rivers, saline and freshwater swamps and coastal billabongs.
Climatic
conditions in the north where crocodiles live vary considerably
from the dry season from May to October, to the wet season of November
to April. Saltwater Crocodiles will occasionally go upstream into
areas considered as typically Freshwater Crocodile habitat and
both species will exist together, albeit uneasily. Areas of Saltwater
Crocodile have been degraded by feral animals such as water buffalo,
as well as development of these areas by man.
